Many businesses have multiple projects underway at any given time. Projects for customers. Projects to improve something. Projects to maintain equipment. Projects to align the organization. Projects to find the next big money-maker. But these efforts are always subject to uncertainty. When will it be finished? Sometime between sooner and later! How much will it really cost? Probably more than we expect! Will it do everything we want it to do? Well, we sure hope so, but maybe not! And often these projects have to compete with each other for funding, for internal resources, and for priority.
HANGING FIRE is about that uncertain world – your world. It is about discovering a way of thinking that enables you and your colleagues to manage the unknown, achieve predicable results in the face of uncertainty, and gain 30% to 50% in capacity with minimal or no additional investment.

While I think some of the earliest Theory of Constraints books by Goldratt are probably deeper (The Goal and It's Not Luck), this is a good business level primer for project oriented organizations. The book, Critical Chain Project Management, is probably a more detailed look at this and overlaps quite a bit but I would read this one first myself. If I were coaching a business leader to come up to speed on this stuff and decide whether it could help their organization, I think this would be a good starting point (Followed by the Goldratt books I mention with a project director reading the Critical Chain book to understand the nuts and bolts).Product details

Hanging Fire Achieving Predictable Results in an Uncertain World eBook Jeff Cox Dale Houle Hugh Cole Reviews
Great read, solid background to understand the difficulties and solutions for a multi-project type business/company. Specifically, its examples are about a food development company and a construction company. A prior appreciation for the Theory of Constraints is beneficial but not a requirement.
Excellent book they lays out TOC and Critical Chain concepts
Easy and enjoyable to read. Strong introduction to managing projects and portfolio using TOC principles. I especially enjoyed the competing idea of using new project management software to "fix" what was broken.
This is a great read. Contains valuable insights into the production process. I use the Theory of Constraints in my business coaching process.
I am most impressed with “Hanging Fire” because it kept me interested while giving practical information and ideas. It’s clear examples of the concept being taught made it easy for me to visualize practical application in my own project oriented job.
A continuation of TOC's Critical Chain project scheduling tactics told in novel form, the explanations of the choices facing the multi-project organization were perfectly timed as I rolled out TOC at the site I run. Very readable and easy to pick up to scan for nuggets of wisdom.
Hanging Fire is a very good follow-up to The Goal by Goldratt and Cox; both novels benefit from the literary skills of Jeff Cox. The essence of Hanging Fire is to demonstrate a workable and effective approach to deal with unknown variations in project management portfolios. It is a generalization of the traditional Drum-Buffer-Rope algorithm. It may also be regarded as a version of CONWIP. This enhanced approach could be called Gate-WIP-Buffer-Rope (GWBR) where there are multiple projects sharing resources. WIP does not have to be constant. Successful application of GWBR requires Deming’s ‘profound knowledge’ of systems to effectively size and locate the buffers.
Hanging Fire brings together elements of TOC, Lean and Six sigma. It works but it remains to use a dynamic approach. The reader is referred to Boyd , The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War by Robert Coram, Certain to Win, The Strategy of John Boyd Applied to Business by Chet Richards and Business Dynamics, Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World by John D. Sterman.
Hanging Fire needs graphics similar to those in The Race by Goldratt and Fox to earn a 5 star evaluation
